Privacy Policy
Last updated October 4, 2026
In short: we collect only what we need to run your account and show your stories. We don't sell data, show ads, or put trackers on reader pages. Payments are handled by Paddle; we never see your card.
Who is responsible
Burning Tree Press is operated by Keith B. Phillips, which is responsible for the personal information described here. Contact: hello@burningtreepress.com.
Information about writers (account holders)
- Account details: your email address, display name, and a securely hashed version of your password (we never store your actual password).
- Your content: the manuscripts, covers, titles, descriptions, and optional support link you provide.
- Plan and billing status: your plan, subscription status, and renewal date, and the customer and subscription identifiers Paddle gives us. Paddle, as Merchant of Record, processes your payment details, address, and tax information under its own privacy policy.
- Activity records: when you sign in, create, edit, publish, or delete a story, so we can secure accounts and resolve problems.
Information about readers
Readers don't need an account. Reader pages contain no advertising, analytics, or third-party tracking scripts. Like almost every website, our server keeps standard access logs (IP address, browser type, the page requested, and the time). We use them for security and troubleshooting and keep them for up to 30 days. A reader's reading position and display settings (text size, theme, and so on) are saved only in their own browser, on their own device.
Cookies
We use a single essential cookie to keep writers signed in to the publishing app. We don't use advertising or analytics cookies. The marketing pages load fonts from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address when the fonts are fetched.
How we use information
- To provide the Service: host and display your stories, run your account, and apply your plan.
- To send you account emails, such as address verification, password resets, billing notices, and important changes to the Service. We won't send you marketing email unless you've opted in.
- To keep the Service secure and to prevent abuse.
- To meet legal obligations.
Where privacy law requires a legal basis, we rely on performing our contract with you, our legitimate interest in running a secure service, and compliance with legal obligations.
Who we share information with
We don't sell or rent personal information. We share it only with service providers that help us run the Service, under contracts that protect it:
- Paddle: payments, invoicing, and tax (Merchant of Record).
- Amazon Web Services: server hosting and sending account emails (Amazon SES), in the United States.
- Google Fonts: web fonts on our marketing pages.
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users or others.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and content while your account is open. When you delete a story or your account, we remove it from the live Service right away; copies in our backups are deleted within 30 days. Paddle keeps transaction records as tax law requires.
Your choices and rights
You can view and change your account details, and delete stories or your entire account, from the app. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, or to object to certain uses. Email hello@burningtreepress.com and we'll respond within 30 days. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
International transfers
We run the Service from the United States. If you use it from elsewhere, your information will be processed in the US, and we rely on appropriate safeguards where the law requires them.
Children
The Service isn't intended for children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information.
Changes
We'll post any changes here and update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll also email account holders.
