Copyright & DMCA

In short: if a story here uses your work without permission, email our designated agent at hello@burningtreepress.com with the name of the publication and what your complaint is about. We act promptly, and writers who repeatedly post work that isn't theirs lose their accounts.

Our designated agent

Burning Tree Press respects writers' rights and follows the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Our designated agent for copyright complaints is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office:

How to send a complaint

Email the agent and include:

  1. The name of the publication on Burning Tree Press, and its link if you have it (for example https://read.burningtreepress.com/…).
  2. What the complaint is about: the work of yours you believe was copied, and which part of the publication uses it.
  3. Your name, mailing address, phone number and email address.
  4. A statement that you believe in good faith that the use isn't authorized by you, your agent, or the law.
  5. A statement that the information in your complaint is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or are authorized to act for them.
  6. Your signature (typing your full name works).

Knowingly false claims can make the sender liable for damages, so please only report work you have the right to protect.

What we do

When we receive a complete complaint, we promptly take the publication offline and let its writer know, with a copy of the complaint.

If your story was removed by mistake

If you're the writer and believe your story was removed by mistake or misidentification, you can send a counter-notice to the same address with: the name and former link of the publication; a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe in good faith it was removed by mistake or misidentification; your name, address and phone number; your consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for your address (or, if you live outside the U.S., any judicial district where Burning Tree Press may be found) and to accept service from the person who complained; and your signature. We pass it to the person who complained and may restore the story after 10 to 14 business days unless they tell us they've gone to court.

Repeat infringers

A writer who repeatedly posts work that isn't theirs will lose their account, and their stories will be taken offline. See also our Terms and Content Policy.
